New column: Get homes off welfare

My new column is up online and in the issue of TIME with Sgt. First Class Chet Millard on the cover. It's about the real-estate-industrial complex. And if you're wondering whether it was inspired by—and is shamelessly derivative of—Barbara's TIME.com piece of few days ago, the answer is yes, of course it is.

Well, yes. Except for the industrial part; I'm not sure where that comes in, except for symmetry with the Eisenhower speech.

But this won't change, because of the vested interests you cite (including the millions of mortgage-holding homeowners). Except in conjunction with a total restructuring of the US tax system. And there are far, far too many vested interests for that to happen. Let's just see if we can rationalize one small piece at a time.

So why didn't they include your column in the contents pages?

Great column, wonder if any politician will listen to your common sense analysis, especially about how locking into housing that loses value makes it so difficult to move. Here in Michigan it is obviously a huge problem.

    Dear Curious Capitalist:
I just read this column in print, and felt the urgent need to ask you: How is getting a tax break for the payment of interest on our mortgage welfare? Don't you see?
When we pay taxes , we are subsidizing the government... not the other way around.

It's great that you only want tax breaks while the banks are struggling. I'm guessing that your next house payment will be made via bank kickback. It's time for the economy to truly trickle down TO HOMEOWNERS.
