@mpizzle: It's okay to chip away a little at a time; what's important is that you've got a positive trend going. At the moment we don't.

I'm now thinking of writing a column about this, maybe as early next week. Consider yourself a co-inspirer of it.

Justin,

Can you provide some insight on the impact these deficits might have on our attempt to recover economically and on future economic cycles? I'm a little fuzzy on the long term impact of deficit spending, national debt, and the such. Although I don't believe Cheney when he says "deficits don't matter," I am unsure of why and how it will affect our long term economic interests. Should we be making an effort to pay it off post haste, or is it okay to chip away a little bit at a time?

Thanks,

Matt

Oh, and don't tell anybody, but I think you would have liked my first draft better. ;-)

Yeah, I kind of had that feeling. The opening didn't sound like you at all (I mean that as a compliment).

Thanks for the constructive criticism, TomT. And for letting me know the article's already online.

And if you do have to get anecdotal in a piece like that, you could at least lead off with the story about him vomiting during a game of Ping Pong before recovering to win (this was back at Goldman).

I think otherwise you should just begin with: here's all the stuff Paulson's trying to do. Here's why it will/won't work.

Nice fluff job on Paulson, by the way. I quite after three paragraphs. Why do these articles have to begin with all this bs?

And knock if of with the borderline-anecdotal ledes. This isn't the New Yorker and you're not Ken Auletta.

Just some constructive criticism there, for you.

So basically, what you're saying is that this deficit is only OK when you're fudging the numbers?
