The blogging will not stop
Thrilling news! I have lined up a sucker friend and colleague to take over for me for the rest of this week and all of next! Her name is Barbara Kiviat (you can read her recent Time articles here). She's younger than me and smarter than me and works harder than me, and, most importantly, she's a one-time recipient of a Johns Hopkins Provost's Undergraduate Research Award for a study titled "Suburbanizing Small Town, U.S.A.: The Meta-Myth of Salisbury, Md." (Just found that on the Google.)
It is true that, on the crucial subjects of Danish taxation and Dutch pop culture, Barbara's level of expertise is, shall we say, less than impressive. But don't be too hard on her for that.
She's planning to start Thursday. Enjoy!

JP at tuned in went on vacation too...
The withdrawal..it burns IT BURNS!....ack..
Welcome aboard BK..
If I may bring you up to speed on Danish Taxation...
They have lousy weather. They have high taxes. They don't say hi to each other in the supermarket. They are 'scandanavian' even though they are on the mainland and the other scandanavians are across the baltic sea and get to eat reindeer and moose (meese?) (both are yum btw) and laugh at the danes. They may or may not have invented the danish ring. There is a bridge between copenhagen and malmo (missing an umlaut in there somewhere) in sweden (I've been to both, I suspect the traffic is all the malmoans leaving..but I could be wrong). Many young people leave the country (and are not taking the bridge to malmo).
Whether the high taxes causes the emigration, or the lack of hi's at the supermarket causes the high taxes or if the young are just really into danish rings which were not made in Denmark is subject to ongoing debate. the fringe believes all of this is caused by the reduced moose eating in their diet.
Regarding Dutch pop culture..I think I've done enough work here already.
