CapitalistCast from Davos

So I'm here in Davos, and for no good reason other than that I want to seem like the very model of the modern multimedia journalist, I have just recorded my first ever CapitalistCast here in my hotel room. Here goes (and just so you know, I haven't slept in 25 hours):

My tips for sleeping on those cross ocean trips.

    In the airport:

    1. Approximately 2 hours before flight eat a meal. Yes you get one on the plane, but lets be honest, even business class airline food is still airline food.

    2. approximately one hour before boarding consume 2-3 (depending on your alcholo tolerance) very stiff screwdrivers in somewhat quick succession. If they are free ones from airliner lounge even better.

    Then stop drinking.

    On the plane:
    3. If in business tell stewards to skip first meal but to wake you for whatever 2nd meal is (if in commerical class, you'll have to this yourself).

    4. The I'm feeling kinda sleepy from drinking and now not drinking effect should kick in around the time seat belt light goes off.

    5. happily drool/snooze on person next to you.

Try to avoid falling asleep with a glass of drink in your hand. On one flight the guy next to me consumed some serious alcohol (at 8am local time) on the first hour of flight and fell asleep holding a glass of port (I was in business class). He lost his grip and poured the port all over himself in his sleep.

We did the dinner a couple hours before the flight (burgers at the O'Neals in the swank new American Airlines terminal at JFK). But I only had one glass of red wine, and Mrs. CC had a Bud. We skipped the dinner on the plane, it was empty enough that I was able to stretch out over two seats. We had even bought a couple of exorbitantly priced inflatable neck pillows at the Brookstone at the airport. But it just didn't take. I guess I'll blame it on inadequate drinking.

Wow, it appears you have this ACCENT!? I would never have guessed if i hadn't heard it for myself!

We really suffer from the tyranny of distance down here and most of the world is a very long flight away. SE Asia is a gentle 6-8 hours flight away and manageable but both both Europe and the US are 20-24 hours away on a good day (not including any transfers, airport time, stopovers, or anything else you might be lumped with in transit) - and almost always involve a dramatic change of climate and time zone just to really mess with your head to boot.

Oh, i do have a tip from my own experience: if you can avoid it don't film anything with you in it until you've recovered :)
