The big question: Do they call it Yacrosoft or Microhoo or what?
The semi-big news that Microsoft and Yahoo--united, as Dealbreaker charmingly put it, by their "love of Latin sounding next-gen technological platforms (Vista for Microsoft, Panama for Yahoo)"--are again talking to each other about maybe, you know, getting together seems to have left just about everybody but Yahoo's long-suffering shareholders distinctly underwhelmed. The idea would be to band together to battle the mighty Google, but it just seems like it would be such an unwieldy, dysfunctional company. A shared online advertising network could make sense--and it's entirely possible that's all that will come of this.
But the prospect of a merger does at least raise the truly interesting question of what they would call the new entity. Yacrosoft and Microhoo are the two most obvious, but Yahoo is so much smaller than Microsoft that perhaps Yicrosoft or Microsoftoo would be more appropriate. Microsohoo? Yahsoft? Microshoft? The possibilities are endless! (Plus, I'm told the name Cendant might be available.) Sadly, a more likely outcome would be that the company would just be called Microsoft, with Yahoo its main online brand.

Here several co-workers have been chatting about this 'underwhelming' news. Most of them are journalists, and I'm the web product manager. What I told them is that its not like MS is lacking in the space that Yahoo is in, anyone heard of MSN, Hotmail, Messenger, etc. MS has been out there doing a lot of what Yahoo has been doing; the problem is that they're not doing it well.
So your spot on, dysfunctional indeed, how does Yahoo compliment MS core expertise when it's already been at it, and the best they have for the web is IE...oh I'll probably get flammed for that.
The point is that buying a competitor, and let's face it that's what Yahoo and MS are, in order to be bigger, doesn't make sense when there isn't a strategy or the possibility of a strategy in place at the buying company. Names for the company? That is exactly the question to ask. 'Who' would this company be?
Google is doing a lot of things that seem to move it more and more into MS' arena, but their actually along way from being a true competitor, their Google Apps still leave much to be desired by the business masses.
No, MS buying Yahoo isn't a benefit even in the long run, it would make AOL/TimeWarner look genius in comparison, at least there the argument could be that it was expanding the distribution networks for TimeWarner, and I think, if they stuck it out longer, they would have been right...I know I'll get flammed for that.

Haven't they already named it Microhoo? I just saw what I thought was their website at microhoo.biz. It's funny they could only get the dot biz thing, huh? Cyber squatters...
